ED227 Supervision in Early Childhood Programs

This course meets EEC Director I and II certificate requirements
This course will provide an overview of strategies for effective staff supervision in early childhood settings. A theoretical framework will be presented focusing on the role and responsibilities of supervisors and mentors. Students will reflect on their personal experiences with supervision and develop coaching and mentoring skills through practice both in-class and onsite. EEC Lead Teacher certification is suggested. Course will count towards EEC Director II.

Using the Massachusetts Early Learning Guidelines for Infants and Toddlers

The course outcome is for participants to gain an understanding of how the Massachusetts Early Learning Guidelines for Infants and Toddler serve to support their role as an infant/toddler educator. Participants will be able to use the Massachusetts Early Guidelines to gain a comprehensive view of infant and toddler development, access suggested supportive learning experiences, and develop an understanding of the importance of attachment and relationships in these early years. They will implement best practices as it relates to caring for infants and toddlers

Children Under Stress

Researchers from the University of Michigan identified that stress in children ranks in the top five child health concerns (C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, 2010). Some stress is both normal and, in fact, healthy, as it gives us opportunities for growth, such as finding strategies to manage one’s fear of the dark. Stress in moderation supports the learning process as it can be motivating and increase productivity.   However, when traumatic stress causes imbalance in a child’s life, it can have life-long negative consequences.  In this course, we will identify some of the causes of traumatic stress in children, such as grief, illness, poverty, abuse, witnessing violence, and other traumatic events. Participants will learn more about the signs and causes of traumatic stress and strategies to help young children who are coping with trauma and stress.
